New Year, New You: Why Eye Health Matters

When was the last time you had your eyes tested?

For sighted people, eyes play a vital role in how they experience the world, from performing daily tasks, such as reading and writing, to connecting with others.

It’s important to recognise that vision requires care and attention, and taking proactive steps to maintain healthy eyes can help preserve sight, prevent issues, and improve overall wellbeing.

Just as one would schedule an annual check-up with their doctor or dentist, an eye exam is crucial to maintaining optimal vision and only seeking professional care when problems arise isn’t best practice.

See Differently Optometrist Ali Khazandi says the most common reasons he sees why people delay eye exams is a lack of time and the belief that their vision is fine, or that they don’t need glasses, which can cause issues in the long run.

“Conditions like glaucoma, often referred to as the ‘thief of sight,’ can go unnoticed until a substantial portion of peripheral vision has been lost,” Ali says.

“Other conditions, such as cataracts, can develop gradually over many years, with individuals often adapting to the slow changes and not realising the extent of their vision loss.”

Ali says eye exams are recommended every 12 months for those aged over 65 or with only one functional eye (monocular vision). For those under the age of 65 an eye exam is recommended every two years, unless there are any concerns or existing eye conditions.

“Optometrists serve as primary care providers for eye health,” Ali says.

With the New Year upon us, there’s never been a better time to make the pledge to prioritise your health and wellbeing. This includes eye health.

“Eye health is crucial because vision is a key factor in maintaining independence, from everyday activities like mobility and driving to performing jobs effectively,” Ali says.

“Many eye conditions are asymptomatic in their early stages, which means that by the time they cause noticeable problems, significant damage may have already occurred.”

A healthy lifestyle and regular eye tests are key in preserving your vision and slowing the progression of certain conditions. If you’re experiencing vision loss, See Differently offers expert eye health services to help preserve your remaining vision and support your journey.

“The best way to protect your vision is through regular eye exams, wearing protective sunglasses, and maintaining a healthy diet,” Ali says.
