When Charlotte Germaine’s vision began to fade, it was as if her world was being painted over in shades of uncertainty. Yet, in this unexpected challenge, she discovered a vibrant new source of strength through See Differently and their guide dog program. Her first guide dog was Henry who has since retired, and her current guide dog is Zeke.

Receiving both her dogs sparked a deep desire to fundraise for See Differently, so she could help give others the same support and companionship she has provided.

“I was inspired to give back to the low vision community and help them receive the independence and support that I was fortunate to have,” said Charlotte.

“My guide dogs, especially my first guide dog Henry, has played a huge role in my fundraising journey and everyday life. The simple presence of a guide dog alone draws attention and sparks conversations, making it easier to share my story and the importance of See Differently’s work.”

Charlotte’s fundraising efforts began with modest raffles and have evolved into grand events, including high teas, buffet-style gatherings and the creation of her cookbook, Can’t See, Can Cook, which was very popular with many who purchased it.

“Fundraising has not only helped others but also helped me grow as a person, giving me a sense of purpose and belonging. I’ve made so many friends and formed relationships with people who understand me. It’s not just about the money raised; it’s about the confidence I’ve gained and the community I’ve built around me.”

Over the past six years, one of her notable achievements has been her annual dinner held during Assistance Dog Week, with this year’s event attracting over 127 attendees and raising just over $18,000.

Incredibly, Charlotte has raised more than $50,000 for See Differently giving more people with low vision, veterans with PTSD and Autistic children a chance at having a guide or assistance dog.

“See Differently guide and assistance dog program has been a lifeline for me and many others. Knowing that I’m contributing to a cause that helps people regain their lives motivates me every day.”
